Vick checks in

PHILADELPHIA – Michael Vick’s contract isn’t his foremost concern headed into training camp.

As for DeSean Jackson? Well, Vick isn’t so sure his sentiment is shared by the Pro Bowl wideout.

Vick spoke to reporters on Tuesday after checking in to the NovaCare Complex and working out with the training staff.

The Eagles’ starting quarterback said he welcomed a contract extension but wouldn’t allow discussions about his future to cloud his personal goals of being the Eagles’ leader and carrying the team to its first Super Bowl title.

“My main priority right now is to be the best football player in practice that I can be and let that carry over into the game and let things happen when they’re supposed to,” he said.

“So that’s always been my approach. You play good enough, you play well, and you impress the people who expect a lot out of you, good things happen.”

Per new CBA rules, the Eagles have until Sept. 20 to reach a contract extension with Vick, who is currently playing under the one-year franchise tag that will play him around $16 million.

Even if discussions with his agent, Joel Segal, carry into the regular season, Vick said he wouldn’t be deterred.

“What’s that? Two games? Three games? By Sept. 20th? The only thing I’d be worried about is being 2-0, 3-0,” he added. “So like I said, if it’s supposed to happen, it’ll happen. The worst thing you can do is think about it. That’s always been my approach.”

But the forecast for his top weapon is much cloudier. Vick said he spoke to Jackson on Monday but isn’t sure if the Pro Bowl wideout plans to report Wednesday to Lehigh for the start of training camp or hold out for a contract extension.

Jackson enters the final year of the four-year deal he signed in 2008.

“I talked to DeSean yesterday and we’re trying to figure out what’s going to happen,” Vick said. “Hopefully, he’ll be here tomorrow. DeSean just has some things to think about, some decisions to make that only himself can make.

“I just don’t know. I’m being realistic about the situation. So, it’s all in what DeSean wants. Hopefully, he’ll be here and I think he will.”

Vick said he had hoped the work stoppage would have ended sooner than Monday but spent much of his lockout studying footage of his games last year, when he remarkably inherited the starting job and churned out a Pro Bowl season in his first year starting since 2006.

Telling reporters that he’s “ready to take it to the next level,” Vick spoke candidly about his quest to be known as one of the elite quarterbacks in the game’s history and about delivering the Eagles their first Super Bowl title.

“It’s more pressure, but that’s what I thrive off, and that’s what comes with being a quarterback and being a great one,” he said. “There are so many things you have to go through and be able to withstand in order to maintain greatness. That’s what I’m on a quest for – not only myself but also the other guys in that locker room. We all have to be on one accord, and that’s why it’s a team.”

Other tidbits so far from check-in date:
* Second-year safety Kurt Coleman might not be the lead horse to start at safety, even if Quintin Mikell isn’t retained, but Coleman confidently predicted that one of the two starting positions is his to lose.

“It’s my spot to go out there and take,” he said.

* A.Q. Shipley, who spent last year on the practice squad, looked slim and svelte at check-in, another offensive linemen adhering to Howard Mudd’s preference of athleticism over size.
* Kevin Kolb still hasn’t been traded.

* UD quarterback Pat Devlin will sign with the Dolphins, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
